The Holkham estate was purchased by Sir Edward Coke in 1609. He was a famous lawyer and politician and, when he was Attorney General, he prosecuted, amongst others, Sir Walter Raleigh and Guy Fawkes.

Thomas Coke began the building of the hall began in the 1730's, the style was influenced by his 6 year "Grand Tour" of Europe where he was inspired by the ancient temples and palladian villas he saw in Italy.

In 1837, Thomas William Coke was given the title Earl of Leicester by Queen Victoria, the title is currently held by the 8th Earl.

The family have had close ties to the royal family who were regular visitors when they stayed at nearby Sandringham House.

The house and grounds have been extensively renovated and restored in recent years and their aim is to be the UK's most pioneering and sustainable estate.
