External Engagement

Children posting mathematical designs to a poster boardAcademics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics are involved in a wide range of external engagement activities across all four nations. Here are just some examples of our outreach activities: we have given public lectures on the history of mathematics at the Museum of London, organised Royal Institution Masterclasses for school children from Bletchley Park to Bradford, run code-breaking masterclasses for rural schools in the Highlands and Islands for Maths Week Scotland, and presented talks and interactive workshops at Northern Ireland Science Festival. Look out for us at the Green Man Festival in Wales! We are passionate about sharing our love of mathematics with the public through developing exhibitions, such as the Winton mathematics gallery at the Science Museum, and by sharing our research expertise through live events, including our own Open STEM talks series.

Additionally, the School provides academic support for the acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series More or less, which has received the RSS Statistical Excellence in Journalism Award for Coronavirus reporting.
