What is The Open University?

We were founded to make higher education available to all. We mix online learning and group tutorials to create supported open learning degree courses that work for our students. You don’t need to move away, you choose where and when to study.

We offer around 120 qualifications and 600 modules, and are the only Scottish university rated over 90% for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for ten years running. Perhaps that’s why 18,000 students, from Shetland to Stranraer, are currently earning their degrees with us.

  • We value what you have - You could already be part way to a qualification. If you’ve studied in the past you may be able to transfer those credits towards an OU qualification, this includes study undertaken as part of your HNC or HND.

  • We’ll support you all the way - With over 50 years’ experience in distance learning, we’ll ensure that you don’t feel distant - you’ll get regular support from your tutor, other students and your Student Support Team.
  • You could study for free! - Over half of all our students receive financial support. We offer part-time fee grants, flexible payment options, and if you earn less than £25,000 a year you may be able to study for free.
