A second chance for Syrian refugee, Rasha

Having settled in Northern Ireland for 4 years after having left Syria, Rasha has been given an opportunity to study that she did not have before.  She is now currently studying a BSc in computing and IT.

The Open University has seen a rise in its student numbers in Northern Ireland over the past year with more people choosing to study online with the OU as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Leona is studying an Adult Nursing degree with The Open University.  A mum of 3 boys, she has her hands full juggling the demands of working as a Child Health Assistant in the Public Health Nursing Team in the Northern Trust, studying for her degree and looking after her family.

The worst thing has been Lockdown, I was a busy venue technician and I was used to being busy with events and creating content, and when my industry got severally hit, I almost lost my job. I got my hours reduced so severally that my mental health took a real hit; I was worried about my future.
