Overview

In this session, we will focus on how to successfully construct surveys, conduct interviews and run focus groups as methods for carrying out research into STEM teaching and learning.  We will provide an overview of the methods; designing appropriate questions; the practicalities of employing them in an OU context; benefits and disadvantages, and an introduction to analysing the data collected.

Learning objectives

After attending the session, participants will gain an understanding of:

  • How to design surveys and set up focus groups and interviews
  • The benefits and disadvantages of each method
  • How to choose the most appropriate method
  • The practicalities of these various methods
  • How to analyse the data collected using these methods
