Overview

In this session, we will focus on how to successfully conduct interviews and run focus groups as methods for carrying out research into STEM teaching and learning.  We will provide an overview of these methods; constructing appropriate questions; the practicalities of employing them in an OU context; benefits and disadvantages; and an introduction to analysing the data collected.

Learning objectives

After attending the session, participants will gain an understanding of:

  • How to set up focus groups and interviews
  • The benefits and disadvantages of each method
  • How to choose the most appropriate method
  • The practicalities of these methods
  • How to analyse the data collected using these methods

About the facilitator

Trevor Collins is a Senior Research Fellow in KMi and Deputy Director of eSTEeM.  He has an extensive background in scholarship of teaching and learning.
