eSTEeM Seminar Series

In the early 1980s the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) initiated a programme for anti-racist education. Some teachers extended the concept to the science curriculum, rooting contemporary inequalities in racist forms of science. By changing the science curriculum in secondary schools, teachers enhanced social inclusion and students’ engagement.

These efforts were brought together in a conference hosted by Holland Park School. Presentations there became the basis for a book, Anti-Racist Science Teaching, edited by Dawn Gill and Les Levidow (Free Association Books, 1987, still available from various outlets).

This seminar will hear about those experiences from two teachers, Ashok Sethi and Liz Lindsay, both contributors to the 1987 book. The event will be introduced by Dr Les Levidow (co-editor), a Senior Research Fellow at the OU.

Facilitated by Dr Les Levidow, Senior Research Fellow, FASS.

Registration

Each seminar will be recorded and followed by an (optional) online evening discussion on the first Thursday of each month where OU colleagues are invited to come together and discuss in more detail the issues raised in the previous week’s seminar. To confirm your online attendance to the seminar and/or online discussion, please visit the registration page by Monday 25th January.

This seminar is open to OU staff.
