Putting Scholarship Centre Stage at ISSOTL 2023

20th November 2023

eSTEeM was well-represented at the recent International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) Conference on the 8-11 November. Hosted by Utrecht University at the Het Spoorwegmuseum (or Railway Museum if your Dutch is a bit rusty!) the conference welcomed over 650 delegates from around the world to share and discuss SoTL work with other colleagues undertaking systematic inquiry about student learning.

Diane Butler and Andrew Potter presenting at ISSOTL 23Now in its 19th year, ISSOTL supports and facilitates the collaboration of scholars in different countries and the dissemination of findings and applications across national boundaries.

This year’s theme was ‘Context Matters’ and focused on the importance of context in teaching and learning, as well as for conducting SoTL. The conference programme reflected on four levels of context: the teaching and learning context, the disciplinary context, the institutional context, and the geographical, language and political context.

eSTEeM was delighted to have four project teams presenting at this conference sharing best practice and demonstrating the breadth and quality of SoTL inquiries being undertaken by OU STEM colleagues. The surroundings of the Railway Museum afforded speakers the unique opportunity of presenting their work to delegates on the various railway carriages in the museum which was quite an experience.
