Exploring the experience of ‘previously registered’ students

The aim of the project is to explore the experience of students who have been registered on the same module for one or more previous presentations, have either withdrawn, deferred, or been deregistered, and have subsequently returned to study on the same module. Statistical research on a Level 1 multi-disciplinary Social Science module shows that this group of students might make up 10 – 20% of a cohort and are at a much higher risk of not completing the module than students who are first time registrants.

The areas the project aims to explore are:

-the reasons for students’ deferral/withdrawal/deregistration and their decision to return to the module.

-the support they’ve received during the period from deferral/withdrawal/deregistration and the point where they are reregistered on the module

-what support they need in order to succeed on their second/third/fourth/fifth attempt.

The purpose of this is to find out if there are commonalities of experience and whether there is scope to develop areas of tutor and/or module-based support that would allow more of these students to successfully complete their module of study.

The aim is to contact students who have previously registered on and returned to Level 1 modules in the School of Social Sciences and Global Studies, in the first instance via a questionnaire. Once results have been assessed, students who have given consent will be contacted for a follow-up interview.
