PRAXIS brings together academics from Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies (WELS) and also the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) to promote and support the scholarship of teaching and learning in our Faculty.
PRAXIS is one of four Open University centres for scholarship and innovation, established in response to the University's commitment to sustained and intentional inquiry into learning, teaching and assessment practices in higher education. The term PRAXIS has found expression in a range of contexts and settings over time. Whilst often associated with the links between theory and practice, PRAXIS also has a moral and ethical dimension; it is concerned with action which is informed and committed. Thus, the concept of 'praxis' represents our centre's commitment to practitioner enquiry that seeks to understand and advance practice in the field of teaching and learning through research.
Claire Saunders: Hello, my name is Claire Saunders and I’m Director of Praxis, the Centre for Scholarship and Innovation in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies at The Open University. The centre exists to bring together colleagues interested in the many ways in which the scholarship of teaching and learning can inform our practice and drive innovation in open and distance learning within the faculty, the university and beyond. We’re convinced that high quality learning and teaching should be at the heart of the University’s mission to be open to people, places, methods and ideas. We’re a community of scholars, comprising academic, associate lecturer, professional services and student colleagues – diverse voices, each with a vital role to play in asking the questions and making the connections that can act as catalysts for scholarship. Increasingly, as our scope widens, we’re working with external partners in new collaborations that can strengthen the impact of our scholarship across the sector. Our centre is characterised by the high value it gives to the scholarship of teaching and learning and an approach that is driven by dialogue and collaboration. These things ensure that our scholarship remains fresh and dynamic, able to respond to the many challenging questions about open and distance learning that are increasingly shaping the higher education agenda. We hope that our website both showcases some of the exciting work that PRAXIS does and inspires you to join us!
