Science working groups

Contact the working group leads to participate in the science cases

High-redshift galaxies (Lee Armus & Luigi Spinoglio)

Example use cases:

  • What physical processes start, regulate, and eventually stop star formation and the growth of galaxies over Cosmic time ?
  • What are the relative contributions of nuclear fusion (stars) and gravitational potential energy (accreting black holes) to the re-ionization of the Universe and the production of the IR background?
  • What is the origin and composition of the first dust and heavy elements in the Universe, and when did they arise?

Low-redshift galaxies (Floris van der Tak & Sue Madden)

Example use cases:

  • What local and global processes determine the star formation rates of galaxies?
  • What are the main interstellar matter reservoirs of galaxies and how do they interact?
  • How does the dust content of galaxies depend on metallicity and other properties?

Star and planet formation and evolution (Marc Audard & Inga Kamp)

Example use cases:

  • Gas mass (HD only with SAFARI; SMI)
  • Gas dissipation and photoevaporation (SMI)
  • Water trail (gas and ice; SAFARI + SMI)
  • Gas (and ices) in debris disks (SAFARI)
  • Mineralogy: tracing evolution of dust (forsterite; SAFARI)
  • Gas distribution in disks (CO ladder, OI, etc)
  • Mineralogy of disks in other features
  • Kuiper Belt analogs and TNOs
