One of the 'Most talked about articles of 2020' was written by Professor Stephen Potter, Dr Miguel Valdez and Professor Matthew Cook, entitled: 'Autonomous vehicles and the urban mobility ecosystem'.
The chapter seeks to provide a strategic view of the key issues, opportunities and challenges presented by the emergence of autonomous vehicles and how these interact with other major trends and changes in the urban mobility regime. Using a case study of public transport systems, the chapter explores how autonomous vehicle technologies could become part of the solution to the social and environmental problems of our urban mobility ecosystem. But there is a danger that this may not be achieved if a transition management role is not understood and developed by all levels of government. By default, the strategic direction of our transport systems could be left solely in the hands of already powerful transglobal forces.
