Robert Bulwer-Lytton, the 1st Earl of Lytton, was an English statesman and politician. He was also a poet who wrote under the pseudonym of Owen Meredith. He was made Viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880 and British Ambassador to France from 1887 until his death in 1891. He was married to British aristocrat Edith Villiers.
