The Open University (OU) and the Arab Open University (AOU) have jointly announced a Hardship Fund for Palestinian students from Gaza, as well as Lebanese students residing in Lebanon, to support their studies with the AOU. This financial support will directly benefit at least 60 students already identified as having an urgent need for monetary aid to complete their studies.

The Arab OU, a longstanding partner of the OU has 1,583 Palestinian students are studying across their campuses in Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with more than 400 from Gaza alone.

The OU and the AOU have each committed £50,000 towards a hardship fund for immediate disbursement to help the students in their final two years to complete their studies.

The fund will be managed and distributed through the AOU with clear criteria for awarding and disbursement on the basis of need via specially set up committees in each geography.

Dave Hall, University Secretary at The Open University, said:

“The action we have taken in contributing to this hardship fund reflects the OU’s Values in Action. Our mission has always been to make education accessible, especially to those facing challenging circumstances. These students are not only working towards their degrees but are doing so under extremely difficult conditions. It’s vital for us, as an institution, to respond with compassion and real, impactful support, and we are hopeful that this assistance will enable these students to achieve their academic goals.”

Prof. Mohamed Al-Zakri, President at Arab Open University, said:

“This partnership exemplifies the shared commitment of AOU and OU to supporting students in need. By establishing this hardship fund, we are extending a lifeline to those facing extraordinary challenges, empowering them to continue their education and work toward a brighter future. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on their lives and their communities.”

Palestinian and Lebanese students studying with the OU who are experiencing hardship or difficulty engaging with their assessments can seek assistance by contacting The Student Affairs Department at the Arab Open University.
