Why do we do the things we do? Why do some memories stick with us, while others fade? Why do we find it so difficult to stay engaged with big global issues like climate change? And why do so many of us wait until we’re struggling before seeking support for our mental wellbeing?
These are just some of the questions explored in Why do we do that?, a new podcast from The Open University available to watch on this link which brings psychology research to life through relatable, real-world conversations.
Hosted by Freya Carter, a current Open University Psychology student, the series takes inspiration from questions, scenarios and everyday dilemmas submitted directly by members of the university’s student community.
Each episode pairs these real-life experiences with leading academics from the School of Psychology and Counselling, offering evidence-based insights into the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that shape our lives.

Across the series of 10 episodes, listeners will hear from Open University experts on topics ranging from memory and imagination to political polarisation, relationships, therapy, eco-anxiety and the psychology of lying.
The podcast was developed to make psychology accessible to a wider audience, using everyday questions as a starting point for exploring the research and evidence behind human behaviour.
