The Open University (OU) is delighted to welcome Professor Michael Fernando who will be taking over as the university’s Executive Dean for Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in April 2025.

Professor Fernando joins the OU from his most recent role as Dean of the School of Engineering and Computing at the University of Central Lancashire.

An experienced leader in higher education with extensive expertise in change management and implementation of academic strategies, Professor Fernando has held many prominent positions across the industry. This includes Dean at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and leadership positions at Manchester Met University.

As a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IET, Professor Fernando is recognised nationally and internationally for his contributions to engineering education and research. His research in RF engineering, particularly in imaging applications for medical and security purposes, has earned him significant accolades, including international awards and major research grants.

On his appointment, Professor Fernando said:

“I’m honoured to be appointed as the Executive Dean of the STEM faculty. STEM at the OU has always been known for its innovation and I’m keen to build on this to inspire the next generation of innovators, change-makers and leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Our commitment to pioneering research & knowledge exchange, innovative pedagogies and cutting-edge technologies positions us uniquely to lead and address the skills shortage in STEM across the four nations and beyond.

“I’m particularly passionate about furthering OU’s steadfast commitment to accessibility, equality, diversity, inclusion and community engagement. By working collaboratively and creatively, we will ensure our efforts reflect our core values and make a meaningful, lasting impact – not only in the lives of our students but in tackling pressing global challenges and societal inequalities. Great opportunities lie ahead, and I couldn’t be more excited to lead the STEM faculty into its next chapter of growth, discovery and transformational change.”

Professor Ian Pickup, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the OU, said:

“We are very happy to welcome Professor Fernando to the OU, where his extensive experience and leadership skills will no doubt be invaluable within the faculty and university as a whole.

“Professor Fernando follows in the footsteps of Professor Nicholas Braithwaite, whose career at the OU spanned 37 years of incredible work and leadership. I want to take this opportunity to thank Nick for everything he has done for the STEM faculty and the OU.”
