Description
Angus Calder shows how Gerard Manley Hopkins was attempting to work through his doubts in Catholic belief and his own abilities in his poetry. He also illustrates and analyses some of Hopkins' most... obvious poetic effects and techniques, and relates these to Hopkins' own religious ideas. The programme includes an extended discussion of 'Spring', a comparison of 'Heaven Haven' and "The Windhover' with briefer comments on 'Felix Randal' and ends with a reading of "Thou Art Just...'."
