Description
After Victor Lee introduces Michael Argyle their follows an excerpt from a discussion between a group of sixth formers and their teacher, about their trip "to Consett, a snail steel town in Co.... Durham. The sixth-formers and their teacher come from a Gloucestershire school. Michael Argyle then analyses the social interaction that takes place between the teacher and pupils by examining the verbal and non-verbal elements of the discussion. To illustrate the various points which Michael Argyle makes, examples from the original discussion are played again. Following this analysis there is a second discussion which involves the same group of pupils but a different teacher. After drawing our attention to some of the verbal and non-verbal elements that take place in this second discussion, Michael Argyle compares the teaching styles that emerge from both analyses. Victor Lee ends the programme by asking if the two teaching styles are equally effective in encouraging learning.
