The programme investigates the ways in which grounds influence children's preferences for social and family backgrounds influence children's preferences for different rewards and their motivation t...o succeed. It also asks whether knowledge of children's reward preferences can help the teacher. The headmistresses of two schools, one a girls independent junior school in a prosperous North London suburb, the other a mixed junior school in a newly rebuilt commercial area on the edge of the East End of London are interviewed and asked about reward systems in the schools, parental attitudes and about what they think the children find rewarding. The children answered a questionnaire and were then interviewed separately. Dr. John Bynner discusses the replies given in these interviews and he also compares these replies with the answers the pupils gave in the questionnaire and with the replies expected by the headmistress. stionnairo anl with th
