Footage description: | Dr. Russell introduces and comments upon passages which he has selected for dramatic representation from Galileo's writings, in particular the Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems (that is, the Ptolemaic and the Copernican), in the translation by Giorgio de Santillana. These passages illustrate the essential nature of the crisis through which Renaissance science was passing and the reasons for the persecution of Galileo by the Roman Inquisition. In spite of the gravity of the theme, they also show that one of Galileo's most effective literary weapons was a stinging satiric humour. |
