Description
The programme consists of excerpts from an interview with Professor Merrill Peterson of the University of Virginia, the author of several authoritative studies of Jefferson, and is introduced by Pr...ofessor John Ferguson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Merrill Peterson begins by defining the many things Jeffersonianism has stood for in American history, and finds the embodiment of Jeffersonian ideals in the Declaration of Independence. He goes on to look at the famous conflict between Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, and examines the tradition of seeing American history as a kind of dialectic between the two men. Merrill Peterson goes on to look in detail at Jefferson's attitude to the French Revolution, the conflict between Federal and local rights, the slavery question and the position of the north American Indian. Merrill Peterson comes to the conclusion that it is very difficult to trace Jeffersonianism in American history today, and speculates on what Jefferson's attitudes might have been to the problems of the U.S.A. today.
