Description
Maurice Hussey looks at various aspects of Johnson as dramatist, concentrating particularly on his use of language. He starts by looking at Johnson as the intellectual centre of a group of follower...s and goes on to trace the individual element on Johnson's style, from an aversion to the empty compliments of the Petrarchan sonnet tradition to Johnson's belief in the virtues of precision of language. Maurice Hussey then looks at Johnson's aversion to Puritanism and his equation of it with imprecision and dishonesty in language. He refers in some detail to Johnson's attitude to alchemy, and again detects a dislike for the deliberate verbal confusions and the way in which they can be exploited by vicious men. He ends with a brief look at 'Bartholomew Fair'
