Description
In this programme Arnold Kettle, Professor of Literature at the Open University, examines the less familiar aspect of the poet, his "concern, all through his life, not only with man as a part ...of nature, but with the big public issues of the day - social, political, intellectual." And he traces Wordsworth's association with the Radicals of his day, and especially with Godwin "a formidable figure: a sage who operated on at least three levels: as philosopher at three guineas; as best-selling novelist at ten-and-six, and as purveyor of personal advice - gratis.
