Description
In this illustrated talk, John Warrack, music scholar and critic, describes how Romanticism saw a movement away from the rigid musical forms of the Enlightenment. He compares the hierarchical socie...ty of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro with the chorus in Beethoven's Fidelio "a band of prisoners musically contrasted with the raging oppressor". Weber's Der Freischutz had a great impact. It satisfied the Romantic longing for rural life and created a symbol, like Verdi's Operas, for growing national freedom. Besides Opera, Symphonies and Sonatas survived, but took on a more dramatic form or aimed at creating moments of intense feeling in works by Chopin and Liszt. Freedom had its problerrs, Berlioz was paradoxically drawn in search of lost (...) Liberty also brought lonliness as apparent in Der Wintereiser. It was not till Wagner that the great problems posed by Romanticism found a solution, and this split Europe into opposing camps. The programme ends with an extract from Parsifal.
