Description
Professor Chadwick examines the relationship between the growing power of the State which occurred in many European Countries during the sixteenth century and the growth and spread of Protestantism.... Did monarchs use the popular movements towards Reformation in order to combat the power of the Roman Catholic Church? Or was the new power of central government one of the reasons for the Reformation? The speaker believes that since conditions and forms of government were different in each European State, so were the relations between Church and State. But he believes certain patterns may be discerned, and these he outlines in order to support his general conclusions.
