This programme consists of an edited discussion between Christopher Harvie and five of Ashton's colleagues at the London School of Economics it concerns the interrelationships between Ashton's care...er and opinions and his work as an economic historian. The programme begins by considering the effect of his upbringing and environment - he came from the town of Ashton, near Manchester - on his attitude to industrial society, then goes on to raise the question of his indebtedness to the way history was taught, both in Winchester and in London. His use of source materials,and of economic methods of analysis, is also dealt with, and the discussion ends by looking at the effect Ashton's liberal economic views had on his historical interpretation.
