Footage description: The programme presents a selection from the extensive correspondence between Isabella d' Ulste and the artists whom she employed. It shows, in particular, the differing nature of her relationship to three major artists - Giovanni Bellini, Perugino, and Leonardo; and in doing so illuminates some of the major questions in the study of Renaissance patronage: how free were artists to paint what they wished, or to what extent reliant upon the wishes of patron? Did the artists' guilds play any part in the dealings between patrons and and artists? How were disputes settled? How secure, financially, were such artists? The programme also gives insight into the extraordinary qualities which mark Isabella as one of the outstanding personalities of the Italian Renaissance.
