Description
In looking back, in this talk, over the period of both the Protestant and the Catholic Reformations, Professor Dickens limits himself to two topics, both of them of profound importance to Reformati...on studies. First, he speaks about what he calls "the essentially popular nature" of the Protestant Reformation. To illustrate this he turns specifically to Luther's Reformation in Germany and considers in particular the role and nature of the town councils of the walled cities of Germany. Secondly, in a wide survey of the course of European history since the mid sixteenth century he gives his reasons for believing that the Protestant and Catholic reformations "did not...tear European civilisation so profoundly apart as some simplifying historians have suggested.
