Footage description: In this programme Dr. Routley introduces and illustrates the work of Martin Luther, who was one of the great hymnists of all time. Luther maintained that music represented a sacramental force, something which could, if properly deployed, lead the common people closer towards God. His hymns were always either biblical or doctrinal and he wanted people to understand the basic facets of Christianity and to be moved by them. 'I would gladly see all arts' he wrote, 'and especially music, in the service of Him who has given and created them.' Luther's musical sources included the popular music and popular musical forms of his time. He drew little from the 'High Church' styles of conventional religion and the words of his hymns as well as their musical settings are direct, forceful and colloquial. In Luther's music, his passionate fervour to communicate his religious beliefs is made both clear and concrete and some of the reasons for his great success become apparent when one listens to it. The programme includes recordings of 'Ein Feste Burg', 'Christ ist Erstanden' 'Von Himmel Hoch', and other hymns and these are analysed musically and with the help of readings from Luther's 'Table Talk'.
