"Arnold Kettle, Professor of Literature at the Open University discusses Stendhal's Scarlet and Black with Douglas Johnson, Professor of French History, University College, London. Scarlet and... Black was published in 1830, but the period it deals with is the 1820's. Stendhal himself called it "a chronicle of the 19th century". The question, therefore, is whether the picture given of the France of his time is an accurate one. And if so, is the novel itself useful to the historian as evidence? According to Professor Johnson the description of the small provincial town is on the whole accurate, but he qualifies this by saying that the attitudes of the inhabitants to, say, beauty, is somewhat unfair, and the description of the Jesuits' activities rather exaggerated. Stendhal, however, "has a great many insights which historians can use." The programme is illustrated by quotations from Scarlet and Black which are read by Anthony Hall."
