Footage description: | "It is impossible, say these writers in effect, not to fall in love with the beauty of Christ's personality". That is how Professor Parker sums up the spirit of the Spanish mystical movement of the sixteenth century. He traces its origins in the Christian Humanism of of the Renaissance and examines some of the writings it gave rise to. St. Teresa of Avila's stages of mystical experience are analysed, the path through discursive prayer and the prayer of quiet to ecstasy. There is also an account of St. John of the Cross's description of "The Dark Night of the Soul" and his poem The Living Flame of Love. Finally Professor Parker makes the link between this mystical movement; and the dominant literary theme of the age - the quest for ideal love. |
