Description
1688 marked the beginning of changes in the relationship between parliament and the monarchy. Professor Stuart Brown discusses the so-called English Revolution from the point of view of the philoso...pher John Locke who was in exile in Holland when William of Orange landed in England in 1688. On his return to England he published his 'Two Treatises on Civil Government' which explains and defends constitutional monarchy. The importance of this work lies in the way it served to express and even establish a degree of consensus about the relationship of a government to its people. This explains why it was accepted as a major statement of political theory throughout the eighteenth century.
