This is the fifth of sixteen radio progranrmes in the general interest series, Arts Review 1988. Noel Coley traces the history of the Royal Society in the 17th Century and in particular examines th...e links between English and Dutch scientists (natural Philosophers as they were known) during that period. He contrasts the work done by Huygens and Newton on the properties of light and optics and their applications to the study of astronomy. He concludes by describing the work of enthusiastic Dutch amateur - van Leeuwenhoek in the field of microscopy which led to his election to the Royal Society in 1680.
