Description
This programme is part of the block dealing with religious studies in it. Professor Ferguson, Dean of the Arts Faculty, talks about the religious songs of American slaves of African origin. He indi...cates both the musical links between Africa and America and also the social situation and the religious thinking of the slaves as revealed in the words of the spirituals. A key theme, for instance, is that of water: it can indicate the washing away of sin and by baptism, the river journey to the northern states where slaves can become free, or the journey across the wide Atlantic back to Africa. The programme is illustrated with spirituals sung by the Crusaders Choir of Hampton, Virginia.
