Description
A radio-vision talk by Brian Allen, Assistant Director of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. The annual Royal Academy Exhibition was the most prestigious in artistic year, and exhib...its tended to be representative of the main trends in British art. The 1829 exhibition marked a turning-point in artistic taste. It was still dominated by portraiture and by treatments of historical or biblical themes in the grand manner of High Art. It included works by Turner and Constable, who were still the leading painters in the country, but there was also evidence of an increasing taste for illustrations of scenes from popular literature or sentimentalised treatments of moral tales. Such paintings appealed to an emerging middle of patrons and collectors who were making money in industry and did not possess the classical education or pretension to spend money on Old Masters or extravagant styles of High Art.
