Footage description: From about the fourth to the twelfth centuries most philosophy was about the right conduct of life: but philosophy had begun as theorising about the nature of the world and until the seventeenth century there was no clear distinction between philosophy and physical science. From then on science became independent; philosophy was then confronted by the choice of whether to claim a method superior to that of the scientists in discovering the nature of the world, or to act as a 'referee', critically examining the nature and sources of knowledge. Both options are to be found in Descartes. In the modern era the second, critical, task is the main preoccupation of philosophers.
