John Milton was born in 1601 and died in 1674. His life thus spanned a period of enormous revolutionary change in England. How did the events of the English Revolution affect and influence his poet...ry, and how far did he, in his official post as Cromwell's Secretary for Foreign Tongues, help shape the course of that revolution? In relating Milton's writing to his times, Christopher Hill suggests answers to such questions. He looks, also, at Milton the private individual, a man with domestic problems and satisfactions which were not entirely divorced from his poetry.
