Description
David Freedberg answers these basic questions: what precisely are the artistic achievements embodied in the Ghent Altarpiece? What makes it a great work of art, and how are we to assess its greatne...ss? To illustrate the artistic innovations of the work, he makes comparisons with several of the works which preceded it. He points out differences in size, accomplishment of facial and figural representation, range and depth of colour, depiction of landscape and interior. David Freedberg concludes by stressing the importance of placing the work firmly in its artistic context before making any attempt to assess its greatness.
