Description
The programme gives some examples of Popes' Pastorals, explains their context, and mentions some of the criticisms of the pastoral convention, made by later critics such as Ruskin (the pathetic fal...lacy) and by 18th century poets (e.g. Stephen Duck and George Crabbe). Some examples of the work of Stephen Duck, the Thresher Poet, follow, he describes what it is like to be a real country labourer, in the period just after Pope wrote his idealised pastorals.
