Description
This programme, the penultimate radio programme for A101, the Arts Foundation course, considers the inspiration found by nineteenth century composers, and in particular, composers from Germany and ...Austria, in the Folk Song they heard. As the presenter, Richard Middleton, says, quoting Constant Lambert, "the whole trouble with a folk song is that once you have played it through, there is nothing much you can do except play it over again and play it rather louder." Until the end of the eighteenth century, folk song's were treated by composer/arrangers strictly as sources for tunes; the result of the re-working was usually highly fanciful and far removed in spirit from the original. This time, Romantic composers supposedly revered the spirit of the folk tradition but they still faced the same problem of what to do with the music, during the programme, Martyn Hill provides the musical illustrations, accompanied by John Constable.
