In this programme A. L. Lloyd describes the atmosphere of folk song collecting in England at the end of the last century; the work was done by middle class amateurs looking for any songs which disp...layed age and arcadian beauty. On the continent, amore scientific school, of which Bela Bartok was a leading member, began by 1900 to consider folk music for its musicological and ethnographic interest, with the help of instruments such as the phonograph. He discusses the period since the last war, when - with the disappearances of rural folk song in western Europe and most of America - interest had turned towards songs produced by members of industrial communities and A.L. Lloyd argues for their consideration as true folk song. The programme is illustrated by representative folk songs of the period.
