Description
This is an interview about the historian's use of art and art history. Artistic movements are themselves part of history, but may also be used as evidence, especially of attitudes, even if of littl...e artistic merit. Many great works show a mixture of social reportage (especially in the Northern painters) and fantasy. But the line between symbol snd representation is hard to draw and agreement on the meaning of symbols often impossible. Also, an artist may misrepresent the facts or spirit of an event, especially if it is not of his own time: in this case the art historian must use documentary evidence. History and art history are interdependent.
