Description
In this programme, Sir John Summerson, Curator of the Sir John Soames Museum, discusses and compares four design entries for the competition of 1835 for the New Houses of Parliament building. What ...style would be deeemed appropriate, the conservative classical, or the fashionable Gothic? How would the competitors symbolise the function of various parts of the building in their design. He argues that the competition winner, by Barry and Pugin, essentially the building we know today, shows English building at a moment of paradox.
