Description
Father Morland begins by describing three typical phenomenon associated with religious experience - the ecstatic element, sudden conversion and the sense of mission. But hepoints out that there are... many different types of experience related to the individual religious context within which they are felt. Different religions too, lay different emphases on religious experience. Equally there are differences of scale on which experience is felt, from that connected with a minor private act like regular prayer, to that which comes with a major devtional event such as Catholic High Mass. However, all could be said to have in common a 'non-rational awareness of the holy' as Rudolf Otto puts it. Tests for authenticity can be divided sharply into those of the believer and those of the non believer. But Father Moreland concludes, many would reject such a black and white account of the alternatives.
