Description
AJP Taylor, an eminent historian, outlines how much Marx and Engels knew of the industrial North, and how much first hand contact with the working class and with capitalists they had. Engels visite...d Manchester, partly on holiday, partly to see the business colleagues of his father, in 1844. The result was his book: The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. Marx went to Manchester in 1843, where he spent four days mostly in a library reading 17th and 18th century English economists. Such was the practical experience which Marx had of his subject. Later, of course, Engels became a cotton merchant in Manchester and became acquainted not only with Chartist revolutionaries, but with steadier working men. He came to believe in a period of slow social advance, rather than an immediate revolution. Marx, however, believed in class conflict; that this conflict would be the last and that society would arrive at a permanent and stable utopia.
