In the final radio programme of course A203 Arnold Kettle talks about the basic concepts of culture and change in the 17th century. He compares John Donne's sonnet which begins "Batter my hear...t, three-person'd God" to the book "The Holy War" written by John Bunyan to illustrate the similarities and differences of the struggle which is linked to the political, religious and class conflicts being fought throughout 17th century Europe. He points out that the word culture has been used in two senses - broadly to cover all activities and in a more limited way in relation to the Arts. Arnold Kettle concludes his talk with a quotation from John Donne's poem "Satire: of Religion".
