Description
In his talk,Professor Briggs draws on quotations from the works of Thomas Carlyle, John Henry Newman and Thomas Arnold to emphasise that for them and other Victorians 'work' was associated with the... virtues of godliness, earnestness and thrift. Through work, "the man becomes a man". The other strand, that of 'a successful man', had its roots in eighteenth century thought (as expressed in Benjamin Franklin's advice) and blossomed in Samuel Smiles' books, Self-Help (1859) being the most popular. "Honourable industry travels the same road with duty; and Providence has closely linked both with happiness...In the school of labour is taught the best practical wisdom", wrote Smiles.
