Footage description: The second of four programmes in the 'Women in the Arts' series. Jenny Lecoat talks to the musician and composer Nicola LeFanu about the apparent lack of women composers and the discussion is illustrated with five musical extracts by Fanny Mendelssohn, Abbess Hildegard of Bingen, Elizabeth Jaquet de la Guerre, Elizabeth Maconchy and Nicola LeFanu. Women have always made music, but all societies impose a different set of taboos on that music making. The programme asks why historically have there been so few women composers, how did women gain access to training, were they well-known in their lifetime and why is their music not in the repertoire today. And finally, the programme alerts listeners to how they can make sure more women composers are heard.
