Description
John Ruskin is a writer who has been criticised by feminists for the way he has stereotyped the woman's role. He has argued that men are the people who 'do' and that women are the people who only l...ook after flowers and tend the weak and fallen. Since Kate Millett's Sexual Politics (1969) he has been cast as the villain of the piece - an author that no self-respecting feminist would read for pleasure and support but only to gather further depressing proof of the iniquity of Victorian values of Datriarchy. Dinah Birch argues in this programme that we should read Ruskin - that, in fact, we all need Ruskin - whether we are men or women.
