Description
John Rutter begins by pointing out that all great music is in a way "classical music" and that one of the marks of that greatness is a balance between form and content, structure and expr...ession. This programme is concerned with expression in two different pieces of music, one by Mozart, the other by Haydn. The emotional expression in the Mozart aria is fairly easy to determine, because there are words to help. As the examples show, words, music and orchestration are combined to create a specific expression of Cherubino's obsessions and passions. When the music has no words, however, it is much less easy to work out what the composer is trying to express. In the slow movement of the Symphony 104. Haydn set out a simple theme and then gives us a series of variations on it. The music seems less concerned with the expression of particular emotions and more concerned with the expression of an intellectual passion for exploring the variations of a musical idea.
